The Do’s and Don’ts of EL Dia de Los Muertos

ddlmThis Sunday, October 23rd is our biggest event of the year, Dia de Los Muertos, otherwise known as Day of the Dead. This year’s festival will be held from noon to 6pm at Steele Indian School Park. Here’s what you need to know!

DO: Bring your family! Our Dia de Los Muertos festival has activities for the whole family, including kids crafts, facepainting, an arts market, food and many many free performances.

DON’T: Worry if you can’t speak spanish! We at Cultural Coalition strive for inclusivity, so don’t be surprised to hear English, Spanish, Japanese or even references to the celebration spoken in the native language of Nahuatl. We are all there to honor our ancestors.

DO: Feel free to dress up for the festival. If you’re not super confident of your calaca face painting skills, don’t worry, we have face paint artists at the event to get both adults and kids alike into the spirit.

DON’T: Forget that the event is outdoors. October in Arizona is always divine, and though air is cooling off don’t ignore the sun! We always recommend sun protection.

DO: Dress to dance. Comfortable shoes are never a bad choice, especially when you’re in the presence of great live music. We recommend wearing some shoes you’ll be comfortable in all day.

DON’T: Show up on a full stomach! There will be lots of traditional and non-traditional eats at the festival, you will be glad you saved some room to try the food!

DO: Get cozy! Feel free to bring a blanket and even an umbrella to watch the festivities and performances in comfort on the grass.

DO: Bring some cash if you want to treat yourself or your family to extra snacks, face painting, or the Arts Mercado but…

DON’T: Bother saving money for admission, the event itself is free!

And Lastly...

DO: Drop by our booth and say hello to us at Cultural Coalition at the festival!  Make a donation! We need your support and We look forward to seeing you there!
